NCA & NCLB
Annual Report

One by one we can make a difference in the life of a child

Holly Area Youth Assistance Mission Statement

To strengthen youth and families and to reduce the incidence of delinquency, abuse and neglect through volunteer involvement.

What We Are

Holly Area Youth Assistance programs are community-based and developed by volunteers who live and/or work in the community in which they serve. The Family Court provides professional staff to work with volunteers and to provide direct casework services. Each local Youth Assistance program operates under the sponsorship and financial support of their local school district, the municipalities therein, and the Family Court. Additional funding is obtained through grant and local fund-raising efforts.

Casework Services

Holly Area Youth Assistance provides free, confidential, short-term, family-centered counseling and referral service for young people 17 years of age and younger and their families who live and go to school in Oakland County. Referrals are accepted from schools, police, neighbors and parents themselves with concerns about their child. The Probate Court’s own Intake Unit diverts cases when, in their judgment, Youth Assistance services are most appropriate. Typical reasons for referral include: retail fraud; school and home problems; assault and various violations of local ordinances. The focus is on the whole family and not just the incident that brings the family to Youth Assistance.

We Provide

Family Education

Holly Area Youth Assistance offers a variety of programs all aimed at improving communication between parents and their children, understanding child development and enhancing parenting skills. By offering a variety of programs, families can choose the program that meets their needs at the time and can continue to attend sessions as their children change, presenting new issues that need to be addressed. These programs are frequently cosponsored by other community groups and/or the local school districts.

Skill Building

Holly Area Youth Assistance provides scholarships to youth who would benefit from a learning experience such as math and reading tutoring, dance, music or art lessons. Requests come from schools, parents and others in the community as well as from the Youth Assistance caseload.

Recreation

Holly Area Youth Assistance offers enjoyable recreational activities for young people and their families throughout the year, e.g. Teen Centers, gym nights and field trips.

Mentors PLUS Program

Holly Area Youth Assistance Mentors PLUS Program is an adult mentoring program for youths six to sixteen years of age who reside in the Holly area. Volunteers agree to meet with their matched youngster from one to two hours each week for a minimum of one year so that a positive relationship develops.

The program provides an adult who is a caring friend for a special boy or girl from the Holly area. A friend who can listen, understand and share in their life. This friend will meet with their match to help develop a more positive self-image.

Some camps are right in the community, while others require transporting. They include specialty camps such as basketball clinics, to those designed to improve math, science and computer skills, to camps where young people learn to interact while fishing, hiking and sitting by a campfire roasting marshmallows.
